India Car Sales April 2026 — Record Month, Top Brands, MoM Growth & Best-Selling

India Car Sales April 2026 & insights.

India's passenger vehicle market roared into its best-ever April performance. According to FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations), retail sales hit 4,07,355 units in April 2026 — a 12.21% year-on-year (YoY) jump over April 2025's 3,63,028 units. It is the highest April tally in Indian automotive history.

That said, sales slipped 7.45% month-on-month (MoM) from March 2026's 4,40,144 units — a predictable post-financial-year correction that follows the typical year-end inventory push every March.

The headline numbers tell a story of structural strength. Rural demand grew 20.40% YoY, while urban markets expanded 7.11% — rural India is now the real engine of automotive growth. CNG vehicles accounted for 22.62% of PV retail share, while EV penetration climbed to 5.77%, both improving significantly over April 2025 levels.

Maruti Suzuki's GST-beneficiary small-car portfolio, Tata's multi-fuel lineup, and Renault's Duster-driven resurgence were the dominant storylines of the month.

Based on FADA retail and OEM dispatch data, these were the top performers by model:

1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire — 23,580 units (▲ +39% YoY). India's bestselling passenger vehicle in April was driven by fleet demand, fuel efficiency, and value pricing.

2. Tata Punch (incl. EV) — 19,107 units (▲ +53% YoY). Compact dimensions and the EV variant boosted volumes strongly.

3. Maruti Ertiga — 19,063 units (▲ +21% YoY). India's top-selling MPV retained strong private and fleet demand.

4. Maruti Fronx — ~18,500 units. Crossover appeal and efficient powertrains continued to drive volumes.

5. Maruti Baleno — 18,306 units (▲ +39% YoY). Premium hatch demand surged with affordability tailwinds.

6. Tata Nexon (incl. EV) — 18,126 units (▲ +17% YoY). Multi-fuel options across petrol, diesel, CNG, and EV kept demand broad.

7. Maruti Swift — 17,829 units (▲ +22% YoY). GST reduction on small cars lifted hatchback sentiment.

8. Hyundai Creta (incl. EV) — 15,291 units (▼ −10% YoY). Despite a decline, still India's top midsize SUV.

9. Mahindra Scorpio (N + Classic) — 14,719 units (▼ −5% YoY). Rugged character and strong brand loyalty kept volumes solid.

Key Takeaways

Renault's 108% YoY surge, powered by the new Duster's delivery rollout, was the standout story of April. Tata Motors' EV sales rose an impressive 72.1% YoY, with the company selling 9,150 EVs in April alone. The gap between Tata Motors at second and Mahindra at third was fewer than 3,000 units, making that the tightest podium battle of recent months. Honda's sharp 46.4% MoM decline was an outlier linked to a base effect from a strong March, not structural weakness.

April 2026 reinforces one clear truth about India's car market: annual momentum is healthy and broadening, with rural demand, EVs, and CNG all growing together. Looking to buy or compare cars? Browse verified listings on Autografi.in
